NotetakingIt is important to take good notes during your research process. It makes writing the paper so much easier! Be sure to include the APA style in-text citation with your notes. This will also help you when you are writing your paper and using your notes.

SummaryWhen you summarize, you give your readers a condensed version of an authors key points. A summary can be as short as a few sentences or much longer, depending on how much detail you want to use in your writing. You will summarize a source when you are going to refer to that source and you want your readers to understand the main ideas from that source. You will reference that person or material by using an in-text citation.

QuoteWhen you quote, you are taking the exact words from a source. You will use a quote when:
* You are writing about the author's position or theory. * You risk losing the meaning of the author's ideas if you summarized or paraphrased. * The author is an expert on the subject and you want to emphasize his/her ideas or knowledge about the subject. |
Paraphrase
When you paraphrase from a source, you restate the source's ideas in your own words. Paraphrasing uses the same level of detail as the original source so it will generally be about the same length as the original source. You will paraphrase when you are using the material from someone else and you will reference that person by using an in-text citation.
